Bowed Tendon in Equines & Canines
A bowed tendon refers to a strain, tear, or inflammation of a tendon, most commonly affecting the superficial digital flexor tendon in horses, and flexor tendons in dogs.
The term “bowed” comes from the visible swelling or curved appearance along the tendon following injury.
Bowed tendons typically occur due to overexertion, repetitive strain, sudden impact, poor conditioning, improper footing, or fatigue.
Performance animals, working dogs, and horses in training are at higher risk due to high physical demands.
Affected animals may show swelling, heat, pain, lameness, stiffness, reluctance to bear weight, or reduced athletic performance.
Early veterinary assessment is important, as tendon injuries can require prolonged rest, rehabilitation, and careful return to activity.
Management often focuses on controlled exercise, inflammation reduction, supportive therapies, and gradual reconditioning, guided by veterinary professionals.
