OCD – Osteochondritis Dissecans
OCD is a joint condition where cartilage fails to develop or attach properly to bone, often affecting young, growing dogs. It can cause joint pain, stiffness, limping, or reduced activity, commonly involving the shoulder, elbow, or knee.
HOD – Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy
HOD is a growth-related bone disorder seen in rapidly growing puppies, causing painful swelling in the limbs, fever, lethargy, and difficulty walking. It is linked to bone development imbalance and requires veterinary monitoring.
Panosteitis
Panosteitis is an inflammatory bone condition affecting young, large-breed dogs, often causing shifting leg pain or lameness. It is sometimes called “growing pains” and typically resolves as skeletal maturity is reached.
Legg-Perthes Disease (Femoral Head Avascular Necrosis)
Legg-Perthes is a condition where blood supply to the femoral head is reduced, leading to bone weakening, joint pain, limping, and hip degeneration. It most commonly affects small-breed dogs.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis involves loss of bone density and strength, increasing the risk of fractures and skeletal weakness. It may develop due to aging, hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiency, or chronic illness.
Osteochondrodysplasia
Osteochondrodysplasia is a genetic skeletal disorder affecting bone and cartilage development, leading to abnormal growth, joint deformities, mobility issues, or limb shortening. It is commonly seen in certain cat and dog breeds.
