Pyelonephritis in Pets

What It Is:

Pyelonephritis is an infection or inflammation of the kidneys, usually affecting the renal pelvis and tissue. It can happen in dogs, cats, and other pets and can be acute (sudden) or chronic (long-term).

Causes:

• Bacterial infection (most common)
  
  

• Urinary tract infections that ascend to the kidneys
  
  

• Urinary obstruction (stones, tumors)
  
  

• Weakened immune system
  
  

• Congenital or structural abnormalities
  
  

Signs You Might See:

• Fever
  
  

• Lethargy / weakness
  
  

• Pain in the back or sides
  
  

• Frequent urination or straining to urinate
  
  

• Blood in urine
  
  

• Vomiting
  
  

• Poor appetite
  
  

Diagnostics:

• Urinalysis (bacteria, white blood cells, protein)
  
  

• Urine culture (to identify the specific bacteria)
  
  

• Bloodwork (kidney function: BUN, creatinine)
  
  

• Ultrasound or X-ray (to check kidney structure, stones, or abscesses)
