Stringhalt in Horses

Stringhalt is a neurological movement disorder in horses that causes sudden, exaggerated upward flexion of one or both hind legs. The affected limb may be lifted unusually high toward the abdomen, particularly when the horse is backing, turning, excited, or first beginning to move.

What Causes Stringhalt?

Two main forms are recognised:

Sporadic (Classic) Stringhalt occurs in individual horses and may be associated with nerve injury or other neurological dysfunction. The exact cause is not always identified.

Pasture-Associated Stringhalt, often called Australian Stringhalt, can affect multiple horses grazing the same pasture. It is strongly associated with grazing flatweed (Hypochaeris radicata), particularly during dry conditions or periods of limited pasture.

Although historically associated with Australia, pasture-associated stringhalt and Hypochaeris radicata are not limited to Australia. Similar cases can occur in other countries, including the United States, where the plant is also present.

Signs to Watch For

Affected horses may show exaggerated lifting of one or both hind legs, jerky hind-limb movement, difficulty backing or turning, and worsening signs with excitement or cold weather. Severe or prolonged cases may also develop muscle wastage.

Management and Recovery

Stringhalt should be assessed by a veterinarian because other neurological and musculoskeletal conditions can produce similar signs.

Where pasture-associated stringhalt is suspected, removing the horse from the affected pasture and preventing further exposure is an important first step. Supportive veterinary care, good nutrition and appropriate rehabilitation may also be recommended.

Many horses with pasture-associated stringhalt can improve significantly, although nerve recovery is often slow and may take several months or longer.

If several horses on the same property develop unusual hind-limb movements, seek veterinary advice and investigate the pasture and potential environmental causes.
