Educational Overview
What is Itchy Skin?
Itchy skin (pruritus) is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It signals irritation, inflammation, allergy, infection, or parasites affecting the skin.
Common Causes
- Parasites – Fleas, mites (mange), lice
- Allergies – Food, environmental (pollen, dust), flea saliva
- Skin infections – Bacterial or yeast (Malassezia)
- Dry skin – Low humidity, poor diet, frequent bathing
- Hormonal or systemic disease – Thyroid, liver, kidney issues
- Stress or behavioural over-grooming (especially cats)
Signs to Watch
- Scratching, licking, chewing, rubbing
- Hair loss or thinning coat
- Redness, rashes, hot spots
- Scabs, flakes, thickened skin
- Ear itching or recurrent ear infections
Diagnosis
- Skin exam, flea combing
- Skin scraping / cytology
- Diet trial for food allergies
- Blood or hormone testing if chronic
Treatment (Cause-Based)
- Parasite control (even if fleas aren’t seen)
- Anti-inflammatory therapy
- Antibiotics or antifungals if infected
- Hypoallergenic or novel-protein diet
- Ear treatments if involved
Supportive Skin Care
- Omega-3 fatty acids (skin barrier support)
- Gentle, non-stripping shampoos
- Moisturising sprays or rinses
- Stress reduction & enrichment
- Address mineral or fatty-acid deficiencies
Pyoderma in Pets
Pyoderma is a term used to describe bacterial skin conditions that may also affect the ear canal. These are often associated with organisms such as Staphylococcus intermedius or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Such imbalances can lead to itchy, irritated skin, scaling, pustules, or small ulcers, particularly when the normal skin flora becomes overabundant.
SET OF
Educational Purposes
Skin – Excessively Itchy Skin Support
This set has been carefully put together with natural, plant and mineral ingredients traditionally associated with maintaining comfort in the skin.
Excessive itchiness in pets may arise from a variety of environmental or seasonal factors, and supporting balance in the skin can contribute to overall wellbeing. These formulations are designed to encourage resilience, soothe irritation, and promote a sense of calm for the skin.
By focusing on comfort and balance, this set may assist in supporting pets during times when their skin feels unsettled or overly sensitive. Practitioner guidance may also suggest complementary measures such as nourishing nutrition, adequate hydration, and regular grooming, all of which can further support skin health and general vitality.
In some cases, pets or animals may experience sudden changes such as swelling of the face, hives on the body, lethargy, or appearing unwell following a bite or sting.
Traditionally, Vitamin C has been regarded as a supportive nutrient for maintaining normal recovery and resilience during such times.
Some practitioners suggest repeated oral administration of vitamin C to help support comfort and balance in the body.
For general supportive care, natural, plant-based formulations such as the Skin Clear 260 Formula – Set of 2 have traditionally been associated with helping maintain skin comfort, resilience, and balance.
* Natural pet botanicals are not intended to replace veterinary care or medication. Our formulas are offered as an alternative health support for your animal's condition and not as a cure.
