What is Mange?
A contagious (or sometimes non-contagious) skin disease caused by mites that burrow into or live on the skin, leading to itching, hair loss, and inflammation.
Common Types
- Sarcoptic Mange (Scabies) – Dogs & cats
Severe itch, red skin, crusts; highly contagious to pets (and temporarily to humans).
- Demodectic Mange – Mostly dogs
Hair loss, scaly skin; linked to immune weakness; not contagious.
- Otodectic Mange (Ear mites) – Cats > dogs
Intense ear itch, head shaking, dark ear discharge.
- Cheyletiella (“Walking dandruff”) – Dogs & cats
Flaky skin with visible dandruff; mildly contagious
Signs to Watch
- Intense scratching or rubbing
- Patchy hair loss
- Red, thickened, crusty skin
- Scales/dandruff
- Ear irritation or discharge
Diagnosis
- Skin scraping or tape test
- Ear swab (for ear mites)
- Sometimes response to treatment

- Treat all in-contact pets if contagious
