What Is Polycythemia Vera?
Polycythemia Vera (PV) is a rare bone marrow disorder in which the body produces too many red blood cells (RBCs) without a normal trigger such as dehydration or oxygen deprivation.
It is considered a primary polycythemia, meaning the bone marrow itself is overactive.
This differs from:

Relative polycythemia – caused by dehydration

Secondary polycythemia – caused by chronic low oxygen (heart/lung disease, high altitude, tumors producing erythropoietin)
PV is uncommon in pets but reported in dogs and occasionally cats.
What happens in the Body?
Excess red blood cells cause:
The packed cell volume (PCV) or hematocrit is often persistently elevated, sometimes above 65–70%.
Clinical Signs in Pets
Signs may develop gradually:

Lethargy

Weakness

Neurological signs (staggering, seizures)

Vision changes

Red or dark mucous membranes

Nosebleeds

Increased thirst and urination

Behavioral changes
Severe cases may present with collapse or stroke-like symptoms.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis requires ruling out more common causes of high RBCs.
Typical Diagnostic Findings:

Persistently elevated PCV/hematocrit

Normal hydration status
-
Normal oxygen saturation
-
Low or normal erythropoietin levels

Bone marrow evaluation (in some cases)
Advanced imaging may be needed to rule out tumors or heart/lung disease.
