PHANTOM PREGNANCY IN PETS & ANIMALS
Phantom pregnancy, also called pseudopregnancy or false pregnancy, is a common hormonal condition that can occur in female dogs after a heat cycle, whether or not mating or conception occurred. These signs can indicate another condition, including mastitis or pyometra.
PHANTOM / FALSE PREGNANCY SUPPORT
Primarily relevant to:
A female may display physical and behavioural changes that resemble pregnancy even though she is not carrying puppies.
COMMON SIGNS
Signs can include:
-
Enlarged mammary glands
-
Milk production or mammary discharge
-
Nesting behaviour
-
Carrying or mothering toys
-
Increased attachment or protective behaviour
-
Restlessness or changes in behaviour
-
Reduced or increased appetite
-
Abdominal enlargement
-
Lethargy
-
Changes in sleep patterns
-
Increased licking of the mammary glands
The intensity and duration of symptoms can vary between animals.
WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?
Following oestrus, female dogs naturally experience significant hormonal changes. In some dogs, these hormonal changes can produce pregnancy-like physical and behavioural responses even when pregnancy has not occurred.
Repeated episodes can occur after subsequent heat cycles.
IMPORTANT
These signs can indicate another condition, including mastitis or pyometra.
If pregnancy is possible, pregnancy should also be ruled out rather than assuming that the signs are caused by pseudopregnancy.
Phantom pregnancy is usually self-limiting, but some signs require veterinary assessment.
Seek veterinary advice if there is:
-
Significant mammary swelling or pain
-
Hot, red or inflamed mammary glands
-
Abnormal mammary discharge
-
Fever or marked lethargy
-
Persistent vomiting
-
Severe loss of appetite
-
Abdominal pain
-
Excessive thirst or urination
-
Symptoms that are unusually severe or prolonged
These signs can indicate another condition, including mastitis or pyometra.
If pregnancy is possible, pregnancy should also be ruled out rather than assuming that the signs are caused by pseudopregnancy.
