What is Malassezia yeast overgrowth?
Malassezia spp. is a naturally occurring yeast that lives on the skin of both humans and animals. On healthy skin, it usually remains in balance without causing problems. However, when the skin barrier is weakened, inflamed, or compromised, this yeast can multiply excessively and contribute to discomfort.
Overgrowth of Malassezia has been associated with common skin concerns such as dandruff, itchy or flaky skin, atopic and seborrheic dermatitis, and other irritations. In some cases, if the immune system is weakened, more widespread issues may develop.
Many pet owners first notice symptoms such as itching, scratching, redness, or a distinct yeasty odour. While often mistaken for being “normal dog smell,” a persistent yeasty scent is usually a sign that the skin microbiome is out of balance.
Understanding Malassezia overgrowth is the first step in helping restore comfort to your pet’s skin and supporting their overall well being.

Probiotics and Digestive Wellness
A healthy balance of gut flora is important for both people and pets. When the natural balance of microorganisms in the digestive tract is disturbed, it can affect overall vitality, digestion, and wellbeing.
One particular strain, Saccharomyces boulardii, has been widely studied and is traditionally used to help support balance in the digestive system. This beneficial yeast has been associated with maintaining a healthy gut environment, supporting normal digestive function, and promoting resilience after times of stress.
For animals, probiotics may be added to daily meals in a measured way, with duration of use depending on the guidance of a practitioner.
Consistency over several weeks is often recommended to help restore and maintain healthy digestive flora.
Practitioner guidance is valuable to ensure the right probiotic strains are chosen and integrated into overall wellness care.
