Educational Overview
Oral Papilloma (Viral Warts) in Pets
Oral papillomas are benign, wart-like growths caused by a papillomavirus, most commonly affecting young dogs and, less often, cats.
These growths typically appear on the lips, gums, tongue, palate, or throat and often look like small cauliflower-shaped masses. They are usually painless, but may cause discomfort if large or numerous.
Cause & Spread
- Caused by a species-specific virus
- Spread through direct contact (shared bowls, toys, grooming)
- Most common in puppies and immunocompromised pets
Symptoms
- Visible oral warts
- Drooling or bad breath
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing (severe cases)
- Mild bleeding if warts are traumatized
Diagnosis
- Usually based on appearance
- Biopsy may be needed if:
- Lesions persist
- Growths change rapidly
- Older pets are affected
Prognosis
- Self-limiting in most dogs
- Often resolves within 4–8 weeks as immunity develops
- Rarely becomes serious
