Educational Overview
CNS - Central Nervous System Conditions
Cerebral Ataxia
Loss of coordination caused by brain (cerebrum) dysfunction. Pets may stumble, circle, misjudge distances, or show behavior changes. Causes include inflammation, toxins, tumors, or trauma.
Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1)
A viral neurological disease in horses (not dogs/cats) affecting the spinal cord and brain. Causes hindlimb weakness, ataxia, urinary incontinence, and paralysis. Highly contagious and can be fatal.
Horner’s Syndrome
Neurological disruption to the sympathetic nerves of the eye. Signs include drooping eyelid, small pupil, sunken eye, and third eyelid elevation. Often linked to ear disease, neck injury, or nerve trauma.
Neuropathy
Damage to peripheral nerves causing weakness, pain, abnormal gait, or reduced reflexes. Can be due to diabetes, infections, toxins, immune disease, or nutritional deficiencies.
Paralysis
Loss of voluntary movement in one or more limbs. May be sudden or progressive. Common causes include spinal injury, disc disease, infections, toxins, or severe inflammation.
Paralysis After Stroke
Occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted. Signs may include sudden weakness, head tilt, loss of balance, facial droop, or limb paralysis. Recovery varies with severity and supportive care.
Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH)
A congenital condition where the cerebellum is underdeveloped. Affected pets show tremors, poor balance, and wide-based stance but are not painful. Non-progressive and compatible with good quality of life.
Nystagmus
Involuntary rhythmic eye movements (side-to-side or up-down). Often indicates vestibular or brain disease. May accompany head tilt, dizziness, or nausea.
Toxoplasma gondii (Parasitic Infection)
A protozoal parasite affecting the brain and muscles. Causes seizures, ataxia, tremors, fever, and behavioral changes. Cats are primary hosts; dogs can be affected. Treatable if diagnosed early.
