Educational Overview
Feline Stomatitis / Gingivostomatitis
Feline stomatitis, also referred to as feline gingivostomatitis (FGS), is a condition involving significant inflammation within a cat’s mouth.
It may involve inflammation of the gums (gingiva) as well as the tissues toward the back of the mouth.
While not considered a single infectious disease, this condition may be associated with a range of contributing factors, and in some cats, underlying viral exposures may play a role.
Areas of the Mouth That May Be Affected
Inflammation may be observed in:
- the gums surrounding the teeth
- the tissues at the back of the mouth
- the inner cheeks
- the tongue
- the throat area
These tissues may appear:
- red or irritated
- swollen or sensitive
- uncomfortable when touched
Common Signs That May Be Observed
Cats experiencing oral sensitivity may show:
- increased drooling (sometimes with discolouration)
- strong mouth odour
- reluctance to chew or eat certain foods
- changes in eating behaviour (e.g. swallowing food quickly)
- reduced appetite or weight loss
- pawing at the mouth
- sensitivity when the face is touched
- changes in behaviour, such as withdrawal or irritability
Possible Contributing Factors (Educational Insight)
The exact cause is not always clear. In many cases, the condition may involve an overactive or altered immune response within the oral tissues.
Contributing factors may include:
- sensitivity to dental plaque
- viral exposures (such as feline calicivirus in some cases)
- changes in oral microbial balance
- immune system variation
- genetic predisposition
- ongoing oral irritation
Why Ongoing Care Matters
Oral discomfort may affect a cat’s ability to eat, groom, and maintain normal daily behaviours.
Over time, this may influence:
- body condition
- hydration
- overall wellbeing
Early awareness and appropriate support can help maintain comfort and quality of life.
Supportive Care Considerations
General wellbeing approaches may include:
- offering softer food textures when the mouth is sensitive
- maintaining gentle oral hygiene where tolerated
- supporting overall nutrition and hydration
- minimising stress
- seeking veterinary guidance for oral assessment and care
