Mast Cell Carcinoma in Pets
Mast cell carcinoma is a type of tumour arising from mast cells, which are immune cells involved in inflammatory and allergic responses.
In pets, particularly dogs and less commonly cats, these tumours most often affect the skin, but can also involve internal organs.
Mast cell tumours may appear as lumps or swellings on or under the skin that can change in size, redness, or firmness over time.
Some pets may also show secondary signs related to mast cell activity, such as digestive upset or local irritation.
The behaviour of mast cell tumours can vary widely between individual animals, ranging from slow-growing to more aggressive forms.
Evaluation typically involves veterinary examination, sampling, and diagnostic testing to determine tumour type and appropriate management.
This information is provided for educational purposes only and does not diagnose, treat, prevent, or cure disease. Veterinary assessment is essential for pets with suspected or confirmed mast cell carcinoma.
