Educational Overview
Leishmaniasis (Leishmania spp.)
Leishmania parasites (L. canis, L. infantum) are protozoa transmitted by sandfly bites and midges. L. infantum is the most important species in canine infections, leading to Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL), also called kala-azar.
Leishmaniasis is caused by Leishmania parasitic species, typically spread through the bite, if the sandfly has the infection. *Not all sand flies are infection.
This infection can affect skin, organs, and immune balance. It is systemic and often chronic, requiring ongoing immune and detox support.
Pinworm and sandfly-related fevers may also occur in the same environments, adding further burden to the immune system.
Dogs are the most commonly affected pets, and signs can vary widely—from skin lesions and hair loss to weight loss or changes in energy.
Because these signs overlap with many other conditions and the disease can progress slowly, any concern about exposure or persistent symptoms should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
Prevention focuses on reducing sandfly exposure, especially in regions where the parasite is present.
Using a natural recommended repellents, avoiding outdoor activity during peak insect times, and monitoring for early skin or health changes can help lower risk.
