Educational Overview
The Kissing Bug, also known as a Triatomine insect, is a blood-feeding bug found mainly in Central and South America, Mexico, and parts of the southern United States. These insects are important because they can transmit Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi.
Kissing bugs feed at night and are attracted to warmth and carbon dioxide. They often bite around the face, ears, or lips of sleeping animals.
How infection happens in pest
The parasite is not injected through the bite.
After feeding, the bug defecates near the bite site.
If your pet:
-
Scratches the area
-
Licks the wound
-
Ingests the bug
The parasite can enter the body through mucous membranes or broken skin.
Dogs can also become infected by eating infected bugs.
Dogs & Chagas Disease
Dogs are highly susceptible and may develop:
Acute Phase (weeks–months after infection)
-
Fever
-
Lethargy
-
Swollen lymph nodes
-
Sudden weakness
-
Irregular heartbeat
Chronic Phase (months–years later)
Working dogs and outdoor dogs are at higher risk in endemic regions.
Cats can become infected but:
Diagnosis in Pets
Veterinarians may use:
-
Blood testing (antibody testing)
-
PCR testing
-
ECG (to detect arrhythmias)

Early diagnosis improves monitoring and management.
Geographic Risk
High-risk areas:
Not established as a concern in most of Australia.
