Educational Overview
Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMT) in Pets
Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMT) is a condition in which a pet’s immune system mistakenly targets its own platelets. Platelets are the small blood components that help with normal clotting, so when their numbers drop, pets may become more prone to bruising or bleeding.
IMT can occur in dogs, cats, and occasionally other animals, and may develop on its own or following stressors such as illness, environmental change, or physical challenges.
Because IMT affects the body’s normal balance, pets experiencing this condition may appear tired, develop small spots on the skin or gums, or show signs of reduced vitality.
Common Things Pet Owners May Notice
-
Small red spots on the skin or gums (petechiae)
-
Bruising that appears more easily than usual
-
Nose or gum bleeding
-
Reduced energy or general lethargy
-
Pale gums
-
Decreased appetite
(These signs are general and can occur in many different conditions.)
How It Affects Pets
Because platelets play a role in normal clotting, pets with IMT may take longer to heal from small cuts or bumps. Some animals may also experience changes in activity levels or comfort.
When to Seek Veterinary Advice
Any signs of unusual bleeding, bruising, or sudden changes in energy should be checked by a veterinarian promptly. IMT requires professional assessment so the pet can receive appropriate care and monitoring.
IMT involves low platelet levels due to immune activity.
Vitamin C supports capillary strength and immune balance and may be used as part of supportive nutritional care alongside veterinary management.

Educational Purposes
IMT (Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia) & Vitamin C
Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMT) is a condition in which the immune system reduces platelet levels, increasing the risk of bruising or bleeding.
Vitamin C is a nutrient involved in capillary strength, collagen production, immune balance, and tissue repair, and may be used as part of a supportive nutritional approach to help maintain vascular integrity and general resilience. It is not a treatment for IMT, but may contribute to overall wellness alongside veterinary-directed care.
