Understanding Hypertension (high blood pressure) in Pets
Hypertension is when a pet’s blood pressure is consistently higher than normal. Just like in humans, high blood pressure can damage organs over time if untreated.
1 Why Pets Develop Hypertension (Most Common)
Occurs due to an underlying disease:
-
Kidney disease – reduced kidney function can raise blood pressure
-
Heart disease – heart failure or cardiomyopathy
-
Endocrine disorders – hyperthyroidism (cats), Cushing’s disease (dogs)
-
Diabetes mellitus – can contribute to vascular changes
-
Certain medications – steroids, NSAIDs
2. Primary Hypertension (Rare)
Signs of High Blood Pressure in Pets
Hypertension is often silent, but watch for:
-
Sudden blindness or dilated pupils
-
Disorientation or confusion
-
Seizures or unusual behavior
-
Nosebleeds or bleeding gums
-
Weakness, lethargy, or reduced activity
-
Heart murmurs or signs of heart disease
Often detected during a vet check-up before symptoms appear
Diagnosis
A veterinarian may use:
-
Blood pressure measurement – cuff or Doppler device
-
Blood tests – check kidney and liver function, electrolytes
-
Urine tests – check for kidney disease or protein loss
-
Eye exam – look for retinal damage from hypertension
-
Heart assessment – ECG or echocardiography if heart disease is suspected
