Head shaking syndrome in horses refers to repetitive or sudden head movements that appear unrelated to normal behaviour. These movements may include vertical or horizontal head tossing, nose rubbing, sneezing, snorting, or signs of facial sensitivity.
The condition is thought to involve sensory nerve irritation, particularly affecting the trigeminal nerve, and may be influenced by factors such as light exposure, wind, exercise, seasonal changes, or environmental triggers. Some horses show signs only at certain times of the year, while others may be affected intermittently.
