Ear Growths – Quick Guide
Ear Polyps - middle ear
Soft, inflammatory growths that often arise from deeper ear tissues or the throat area. They are non-cancerous and may contribute to discharge, irritation, or breathing and balance changes. Head shaking, Ear scratching, Foul odor, Discharge, Pain when touched. The back of the throat (nasopharynx), most common in young cats, but can occur in dogs.
Ceruminous Adenoma
A benign growth of the wax-producing glands in the ear canal. It may lead to excess wax, ear blockage, and recurring ear irritation or some bleeding with infection. Strong pain or crying, loss of balance or head tilt. Visible lump or swelling in ear, Recurrent wax or discharge, One-sided ongoing issue, Possible blockage of ear canal.
Cholesteatoma
A cyst-like build-up of trapped skin debris, usually deeper within the ear. It is not a true tumour, but can expand over time and may affect surrounding tissues if not properly assessed.
Early signs:
- recurrent ear infections
- persistent discharge (often foul-smelling)
- wax and debris that keeps returning
Progressive signs:
- head shaking
- pain or sensitivity
- poor response to usual treatments
Advanced signs:
- head tilt
- balance issues
- facial nerve changes (drooping, asymmetry)
- hearing loss
Signs often become progressively worse over time
