Tick Rickettsia rickettsii
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) is a tick-borne illness caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. It affects dogs and humans and is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected ticks (commonly Dermacentor species).

How It Affects the Body
Rickettsia organisms primarily target the lining of small blood vessels (endothelial cells).
