Educational Overview
Tick Rickettsia rickettsii
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) is a tick-borne illness caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. It affects dogs and humans and is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected ticks (commonly Dermacentor species).
This information is provided for educational awareness.
How It Affects the Body
Rickettsia organisms primarily target the lining of small blood vessels (endothelial cells).
This can lead to:
-
Inflammation of blood vessels
-
Increased vascular permeability
-
Circulatory imbalance
-
Reduced oxygen delivery to tissues
Because blood vessels are involved throughout the body, multiple organ systems may be affected.
Common Signs in Dogs
Signs may vary depending on stage and severity:
Early Signs:
-
Fever
-
Lethargy
-
Loss of appetite
-
Swollen lymph nodes
Progressive Signs:
Neurological Signs (less common but possible):
-
Unsteadiness
-
Tremors
-
Weakness
How It Spreads
Transmission occurs through:
Ticks may carry the organism without obvious signs.
Important Note
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever can become serious if untreated. If a dog shows fever, lethargy, joint pain, or unusual bruising following tick exposure, prompt veterinary evaluation is recommended.
