Warts in Pets
Warts in pets are common skin growths that may appear as small, raised, rough, or cauliflower-like bumps on the skin.
They can occur on the face, mouth, paws, ears, eyelids, or other areas of the body. In many cases, warts are benign and may resolve on their own over time.
What causes warts in pets?
Warts are most commonly associated with papillomaviruses, which are species-specific viruses that affect dogs, cats, and other animals differently. These viruses are often present in the environment and may become noticeable when an animal’s immune system is under stress or not functioning optimally.
Which pets are more likely to develop warts?
- Young animals with developing immune systems
- Senior pets with age-related immune changes
- Pets experiencing stress, illness, or recovery from other conditions
Common features of warts
- Usually painless, though they may become irritated if rubbed or scratched
- Can appear singly or in clusters
- May change slowly over time
- Occasionally bleed if traumatised
When to monitor closely
While most warts are harmless, it is important to observe any skin growth for:
- Rapid growth or colour change
- Bleeding, ulceration, or discharge
- Signs of discomfort or infection
- Changes in eating or behaviour if located near the mouth
Any unusual or changing skin growth should be assessed by a veterinarian to rule out other conditions.
Supporting overall skin and immune health
Maintaining good nutrition, minimising stress, and supporting general wellbeing may help the body manage skin changes naturally. Gentle care of the affected area and avoiding unnecessary irritation are also important.
