About the condition
Chlamydiosis is a bacteria-based chronic respiratory infection, caused by the Chlamydia psittaci bacterium.
Cats with this imbalance may show signs commonly seen in upper respiratory stress, such as watery eyes, sneezing, and nasal discharge.
Symptoms often noted include:
Sneezing
Watery eyes and eye discharge
Coughing and difficulty breathing
Runny nose
Lack of appetite (anorexia)
Fever
Pneumonia, if unresolved
This condition may also affect the gastrointestinal and reproductive systems. In some cases, it is referred to as feline pneumonitis, highlighting lung involvement.
Causes & risk factors
While kittens are more commonly affected, cats of all ages can experience this condition. It spreads easily in crowded or stressful environments such as catteries, shelters, and multi-cat households. Transmission can occur without direct contact: droplets from a cough or sneeze may travel across a room, or bacteria may spread via human touch or shared bedding and feeding areas.
Diagnosis
Veterinarians may confirm with a conjunctival swab (eye discharge sample) or, if pneumonia is suspected, with chest X-rays to check for fluid in the lungs.
Management insights
Chlamydophila may become chronic, even after antibiotic treatment (chemical or herbal), particularly in cats with weakened immune systems. Supporting low stress, immune resilience, and eye/respiratory comfort is important.
Eyes (conjunctivitis / “pink eye”)
In many cats, this presents as conjunctivitis—inflammation of the eye tissues. The condition primarily affects the eyes and upper respiratory tract, though systemic signs may also occur.
Preventive insights
There is a vaccine for feline chlamydophila, though it does not prevent infection, may cause side effects, and is not routinely recommended. In practitioner settings, the chlamydia nosode has been valued as a preventive option for home environments, breeders, catteries, and shelters.
Support options
Liposomal Vitamin C (gel or liquid) has been traditionally considered supportive during respiratory challenges, particularly where lung involvement is a concern.
A targeted set of three formulas traditionally considered in contexts of upper respiratory imbalance linked with chlamydial stress.
Practitioner insights:
-
Historically valued for supporting mucous membrane balance in the eyes, nose, and respiratory passages
-
Often considered for resilience during sneezing, watery eyes, nasal discharge, and systemic fatigue
-
May be paired with immune strengthening or drainage support formulas for broader recovery support
