Educational Overview
Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA / “Swamp Fever”
Swamp fever, formally known as equine infectious anemia (EIA), is a viral disease that affects horses and other equines. It is spread mainly through blood‑feeding insects such as horseflies.
Dogs and cats are not typical hosts and do not develop the disease, but pets living around infected equines may encounter contaminated environments.
Because EIA is a regulated disease with significant implications for horse health, any suspected exposure in equines should be addressed by a veterinarian or local animal‑health authority.
Keeping pets away from areas with heavy insect activity and maintaining good stable hygiene helps reduce the chance of indirect contact.

SET OF
Educational Purposes
Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), often referred to as “swamp fever,” is a viral condition that affects horses, donkeys, and mules. It is not contagious through casual contact—instead, it is typically transmitted by biting insects, mainly horseflies and deer flies, or through contaminated equipment.
Because the virus affects the blood and immune system, horses may show no signs at all, or they may experience periods of fatigue, weakness, weight changes, or intermittent episodes of unwellness. Some horses become long-term carriers without obvious symptoms.
EIA is considered a serious condition in the equine industry, and testing (such as the Coggins test in many countries) is commonly used to identify and manage it. Preventing transmission focuses on fly control, good hygiene, and avoiding shared needles or equipment.
If you suspect a horse may have been exposed to EIA or is showing unusual changes in behaviour, energy, or wellbeing, a veterinarian should be consulted promptly for guidance, testing, and appropriate management.
