Educational Overview
Skin Granulomas
Skin granulomas are firm, localized areas of inflammation that form when the body attempts to wall off substances it sees as foreign or irritating. They develop as part of the immune system’s protective response and can appear anywhere on the skin.
Common Causes
- Chronic irritation from licking, chewing, or scratching
- Foreign bodies such as splinters, plant material, or embedded debris
- Infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or parasites
- Allergic reactions leading to persistent skin inflammation
- Injection‑site reactions where the body forms a localized immune response
- Trauma or repeated pressure on a specific area
Common Signs
- Firm, raised lumps or nodules on the skin
- Redness, thickening, or hair loss around the affected area
- Ulceration or open sores if the granuloma becomes irritated
- Persistent licking or chewing at one spot
- Discomfort when the area is touched
- Slow‑growing lesions that do not heal normally
