Kidney Amyloidosis – Although rare in felines overall, it is a common condition in Abyssinian cats, where abnormal protein deposits (amyloid) build up in the kidneys. This can lead to kidney failure, toxin buildup, and reduced ability to filter waste from the body.

Liver Amyloidosis – A condition seen more often in breeds such as Oriental Shorthair, Siamese, Burmese, Abyssinian, and domestic shorthairs. In this condition, amyloid is deposited in the liver, sometimes leading to bleeding episodes, liver dysfunction, or failure.

Common Causes of Chronic Kidney Disease

• Degenerative kidney changes associated with aging

• Congenital conditions such as polycystic kidney disease (Persian cats)

• Bacterial infections ascending from the bladder or through the blood

• Growths (often lymphosarcoma affecting kidney tissue)

• High blood pressure

• Viral infections (e.g., FIV, FIP)

• Amyloid deposits in kidneys or liver
