Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) in Pets
Polycystic Kidney Disease, or PKD, is a condition in which multiple fluid‑filled cysts develop within the kidneys. Over time, these cysts can interfere with normal kidney function and contribute to chronic kidney changes in affected animals.
Common Causes
- Inherited genetic mutation (especially in certain breeds such as Persian‑type cats)
- Congenital development of kidney cysts present from birth
- Progressive enlargement of cysts over time leading to reduced kidney tissue
- Rarely, secondary cyst formation associated with other kidney disorders
Common Signs
- Increased thirst and increased urination
- Reduced appetite or gradual weight loss
- Lethargy or reduced activity
- Vomiting or signs of nausea
- Poor coat quality or reduced grooming behaviour
- In advanced cases, signs consistent with chronic kidney disease
Diagnostic Approach
- Veterinary examination focusing on hydration, kidney size, and overall condition
- Ultrasound imaging to identify and measure kidney cysts
- Blood tests evaluating kidney function (e.g., creatinine, urea)
- Urinalysis to assess concentration and detect protein or other abnormalities
- Genetic testing in breeds known to carry PKD mutations
- Monitoring progression through repeated imaging and laboratory evaluation
Recognizing early signs of PKD and understanding how cysts affect kidney function helps support timely veterinary assessment and long‑term management planning.

SET OF
Educational Purposes
Polycystic Kidney Disease is a hereditary condition in which small, fluid-filled sacs (cysts) gradually develop within the kidneys. Over time, these cysts may increase in size and number, which can affect the kidney’s ability to filter the blood efficiently.
PKD is most commonly recognised in certain cat breeds, but dogs may also be affected.
Pets with PKD may show subtle changes at first, such as increased thirst, more frequent urination, reduced appetite, weight changes, or lower energy. Because these signs resemble many other conditions, ultrasound or specialised testing is often needed for accurate identification.
Supportive care typically focuses on hydration, stress reduction, gentle nutritional management, and close monitoring of kidney health under veterinary guidance.
Early awareness and regular check-ups help maintain comfort and wellbeing throughout the pet’s life.
Polycystic kidney conditions are characterised by the formation of multiple sacs of fluid within the kidney structure. These cysts are often linked to dropsy (intracellular edema) — a state where cloudy swelling and fluid accumulation interfere with proper cellular balance.
When the kidneys become congested, lymph stagnation often follows. This stagnation prevents the proper elimination of metabolic wastes, leading to an inflammatory response and swellings in various parts of the body. Over time, this burden can weaken circulation, disrupt detoxification, and create a cycle of toxin build-up.
Traditional Support Approach
-
Hydration & Lymph Movement – Proper hydration and natural remedies that promote lymphatic flow may encourage fluid release and reduce stagnation.
-
Cellular Balance – Supporting the body’s mineral and detox pathways may help manage swelling and cyst formation.
-
Waste Removal – Assisting the kidney’s role in clearing urea and other byproducts helps maintain energy and vitality.
Practitioner Note
Kidney congestion with cystic conditions is often tied to deeper systemic imbalances. Clearing the kidneys also helps move lymph fluid more efficiently, which in turn reduces swelling, cysts, and even systemic inflammation elsewhere in the body.
For advanced cases, combinations with lymphatic drainage formulas, mineral balancing support, and toxin binders may be recommended by your practitioner.
Important – Clearing Toxic Waste (Azotemia & Uremia)
When kidney function is impaired, waste products can begin to accumulate in the bloodstream. Two of the most concerning are urea nitrogen (BUN) and ammonia. This toxic build-up, known as Azotemia (nitrogen in the blood) or Uremia (urea in the blood), is directly related to kidney disease or injury and can place a heavy burden on the body.
Activated Charcoal Support
A traditionally valued method for binding and clearing toxins is the use of activated charcoal:
-
Open 2 capsules of activated charcoal powder into a cup of filtered water.
-
Place into a jar with a lid and gently shake to mix.
-
Add a couple of tablespoons or more to every meal, on an ongoing basis.
If your pet refuses food:
-
Oral syringe small sips into the side of the mouth.
-
Approx. 5 ml for a cat or toy dog, or 10 ml for larger pets.
This simple addition may help reduce the toxic burden, supporting vitality and comfort while the kidneys are under stress.
SUBQ Fluids & Kidney Support
Subcutaneous (SUBQ) fluids may sometimes be needed for a short while — or as often as required — while the body is healing.
They can be especially helpful during times of digestive upset, vomiting, nausea, or loss of appetite, when hydration is critical but drinking is insufficient. Request further guidance if you need help with this method-108 Help sheet.
Testing Notes
-
An Albumin test (Proteinuria) can help detect excessive or continuous protein in the urine, which may indicate early kidney stress.
-
If Creatinine levels are normal, consider the natural, plant-based Uro Balance 341 formula.
-
However, by the time symptoms are visible, creatinine (BUN) levels are often already elevated. Since chemical medications can further stress the kidneys, many prefer gentle natural approaches to reduce toxic load.
Supportive Approach
-
The natural, plant-based RenoAid 19-1 drops, used alongside SUBQ fluids done at home or vet clinic, have been traditionally valued for supporting kidney balance.
-
Typical SUBQ amount:
-
Felines: ~ approx. 80ml (no less) under the skin daily for a couple of weeks.
-
Medium dogs: 200–300ml per session.
-
Large dogs: ~500ml per session.
This combination may help bring down waste levels, reduce discomfort, and support the body’s natural recovery process.
Formulated with plant-based ingredients selected for their gentle role in supporting overall balance and wellbeing.
