Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) in Pets
Polycystic Kidney Disease, or PKD, is a condition in which multiple fluid‑filled cysts develop within the kidneys. Over time, these cysts can interfere with normal kidney function and contribute to chronic kidney changes in affected animals.
Common Causes
- Inherited genetic mutation (especially in certain breeds such as Persian‑type cats)
- Congenital development of kidney cysts present from birth
- Progressive enlargement of cysts over time leading to reduced kidney tissue
- Rarely, secondary cyst formation associated with other kidney disorders
Common Signs
- Increased thirst and increased urination
- Reduced appetite or gradual weight loss
- Lethargy or reduced activity
- Vomiting or signs of nausea
- Poor coat quality or reduced grooming behaviour
- In advanced cases, signs consistent with chronic kidney disease
Diagnostic Approach
- Veterinary examination focusing on hydration, kidney size, and overall condition
- Ultrasound imaging to identify and measure kidney cysts
- Blood tests evaluating kidney function (e.g., creatinine, urea)
- Urinalysis to assess concentration and detect protein or other abnormalities
- Genetic testing in breeds known to carry PKD mutations
- Monitoring progression through repeated imaging and laboratory evaluation
Recognizing early signs of PKD and understanding how cysts affect kidney function helps support timely veterinary assessment and long‑term management planning.
