Educational Overview
Tick-borne Diseases
Tick‑borne diseases such as Brown Dog Fever, Rickettsial infections, Rocky Mountain–type spotted fevers, Borrelia, and Babesia can affect animals in many regions. These conditions are transmitted when ticks attach and feed, allowing organisms carried in their saliva to enter the bloodstream. Different species of ticks may carry different organisms, but the process of transmission is similar across these diseases.
Common causes include exposure to environments where ticks are active, contact with other animals that may carry ticks, and seasonal increases in tick populations. Once a tick attaches, the organisms it carries can spread through the bloodstream and begin affecting the animal’s cells, immune system, or red blood cells depending on the specific organism involved.
Signs of tick‑borne illness can vary widely. Some animals may develop fever, lethargy, or reduced appetite. Others may show stiffness, joint discomfort, or changes in mobility. In some infections, pale gums, weakness, or swelling of lymph nodes may appear. Because these organisms can affect different body systems, the outward signs may be subtle at first or progress gradually over time.
Diagnosis typically begins with a veterinary examination and a discussion of recent tick exposure or changes in the animal’s environment. Blood tests are often used to look for changes in red or white blood cells, and additional tests may help identify specific organisms such as Rickettsia, Borrelia, or Babesia. Understanding which organism is involved helps guide further evaluation and supports appropriate monitoring of the animal’s health.
Recognizing early signs and seeking timely veterinary assessment helps support long‑term comfort and overall well‑being.
