Understanding Tritrichomonas foetus

What It Is
Tritrichomonas foetus is a microscopic organism that can affect the intestinal tract, most commonly recognised in cats (especially young ones in multi-cat households or catteries). It is known to contribute to loose stools and ongoing digestive imbalance.

How It Spreads
This organism is generally passed through close contact, shared litter trays, or contaminated environments. Because of its persistence, it may be challenging to completely eliminate from a cattery setting without careful hygiene and management.

Why Awareness Matters
While not life-threatening in most cases, Tritrichomonas foetus can cause long-term digestive upset, and so awareness is important for both breeders and pet owners. Understanding how it behaves allows for better management and support of affected animals.

Supportive Approaches
While veterinary diagnosis and oversight are essential, some supportive practices may help bring comfort and resilience to the animal during digestive challenges:

  • Intestinal Comfort — Gentle, natural preparations traditionally linked with soothing the gut and calming irritation.

  • Mineral Balance — Mineral-rich supports may help restore overall harmony and resilience in the digestive tract.

  • Microbial Awareness — Careful hygiene practices, separate litter trays, and mindful feeding routines help reduce spread.

This strain, Saccharomyces boulardii (SB), has been widely studied for its role in maintaining a balanced gastrointestinal environment and supporting recovery in cases of imbalance, overgrowth, or bacterial disruption.

✔ Traditionally associated with candida overgrowth and gastrointestinal balance
✔ Helps maintain microbial equilibrium in the gut
✔ Supports both prevention and recurrence management
✔ Suitable for cats, dogs, and equines

Directions for use
Cats & Dogs: Add 2 scoops of powder once daily to meals.
Equines: Add 1–2 scoops in a little water and give by oral syringe daily if possible.
Recommended minimum use: 2 months to support restoration of healthy gut flora.

Key Message

Tritrichomonas foetus is a management challenge rather than a catastrophe. With awareness, hygiene, professional guidance, and supportive care, many cats live comfortably even in its presence.
