Educational Overview
General Heart Conditions
- “Coronary heart disease” in pets is rare; more often, pets develop general heart disease (e.g., hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in cats, dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs).
- If coronary arteries are involved, it is usually secondary to systemic issues like high blood pressure, obesity, or metabolic disease.
- Can result in reduced blood flow to heart muscle → heart pain, arrhythmia, or heart failure.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) It affects the main blood vessels that supply blood to the heart, known as the coronary arteries. In CAD, blood flow to the heart muscle can be reduced due to a buildup of fats, cholesterol, and other substances along the artery walls.
This buildup, called plaque, causes the arteries to narrow—a process known as atherosclerosis.
Common signs
- Exercise intolerance or fatigue
- Coughing or difficulty breathing
- Rapid or laboured breathing
- Weakness, fainting, or collapse
- Lethargy, reduced appetite
- Sudden hind-limb weakness (cats – clot risk if heart disease present)
Risk factors
- Obesity / overweight
- High-fat diets (especially in dogs prone to metabolic syndrome)
- Genetic predisposition (certain breeds, e.g., Dobermans, Maine Coons, Ragdolls)
- High blood pressure or diabetes
- Chronic inflammation
Diagnosis
- Heart auscultation (murmurs, abnormal rhythm)
- Echocardiogram (ultrasound) – checks heart muscle, chambers, function
- Blood pressure measurements
- Blood tests (electrolytes, cholesterol, kidney/liver function)
- ECG for arrhythmias
Other Heart-Related Concerns
-
Mitral Valve Regurgitation
Sometimes heart-related symptoms may be linked to mitral valve inefficiencies, where the heart’s valves are not closing properly.
-
High Blood Pressure
Elevated blood pressure may place strain on the cardiovascular system and requires careful management.
-
Fluid Build-Up
Retained fluid in the body may also be connected to underlying heart or circulatory challenges.
