Educational Overview
What is Fur Loss?
Fur loss (alopecia) is a symptom, not a disease.
It occurs when hair falls out faster than it grows, often indicating underlying skin, nutritional, hormonal, or systemic problems.
Most Common Causes
- Parasites
- Fleas, mites (sarcoptic, demodectic), lice
- Can cause localized or widespread hair loss, intense itching
- Allergies
- Food (kibble), environmental (pollen, dust), or flea saliva
- Often leads to itching, redness, and hair thinning
- Infections
- Bacterial (pyoderma) or fungal (ringworm)
- Usually patchy hair loss with crusts or scaling
- Hormonal / Metabolic Issues
- Hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease, adrenal imbalance
- Hair loss is symmetrical, often along flanks or tail
- Stress & Behavioural Causes
- Over-grooming in cats or anxious dogs
- Hair pulls or chews in localized areas
- Nutritional Deficiencies
- Poor protein, fatty acids, vitamins, or minerals
- Coat becomes brittle, dull, or thinning
- Age or Genetics
- Some breeds naturally shed more
- Older pets may have slower hair regrowth
Signs to Watch
- Patchy or symmetrical hair loss
- Red, inflamed, or scaly skin
- Itching, scratching, or licking
- Broken hairs or bald patches
- Secondary infections (odor, pus, crusts)
Diagnosis
- Skin scraping for mites
- Fungal culture (ringworm)
- Blood work for hormones and systemic disease
Supportive & Preventive Care
- High-quality protein and omega fatty acids
- Gentle brushing and bathing
- Vitamins/minerals for skin & coat (zinc, biotin, vitamin E)
- Stress reduction and environmental enrichment
Educational note on deficiency
Inadequate zinc intake over time may affect normal skin renewal, coat quality, immune balance, and overall vitality. Maintaining appropriate zinc levels is considered important for long-term health, particularly in animals with higher nutritional needs.
This information is provided for general educational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent disease. Always seek veterinary guidance for health concerns.
Zinc is an essential trace mineral
is required for normal growth, immune resilience, skin integrity, and overall wellbeing in animals. It plays a role in many natural processes in the body, including cell renewal, tissue maintenance, and normal immune function.
Animals with increased nutritional demands, stress, poor diet history, or age-related changes may have higher zinc requirements.
Zinc is commonly associated with supporting:
-
Normal immune function
-
Healthy skin, coat, and nails
-
Normal wound and tissue repair
-
Balanced growth and development
-
General vitality and resilience
Areas where zinc is traditionally considered important:
-
Skin & Coat: dry or fragile skin, poor coat condition, slow skin renewal
-
Eyes & Mucous Membranes: maintaining normal tissue health
-
Digestive & Metabolic Health: supporting normal cellular function
-
Growth & Development: especially in young or nutritionally challenged animals
-
General Resilience: during periods of stress or increased demand
