Feline Panleukopenia

Different names for the same viral infection

These terms all refer to the same viral infection:

• Feline panleukopenia  (correct veterinary name)
• Feline parvovirus
• Feline parvo
• Feline distemper
• FPV
  
  

They are caused by the virus Feline parvovirus, which is closely related to canine parvovirus.

Feline Panleukopenia is a serious viral condition affecting cats—particularly kittens, unvaccinated animals, stressed cats, and those with weakened immune systems.


This guide provides an educational overview to help pet owners and carers recognise the key features and understand how the virus affects the body.

1. What Is Feline Panleukopenia?

Feline Panleukopenia (FPV) is caused by a parvovirus that targets rapidly dividing cells.


The name “pan-leuko-penia” refers to:

• Pan – all
  
  

• Leuko – means - "white blood cells"
  
  

• Penia – means - decrease or lack
  
  

The virus leads to a significant drop in certain white blood cells, making the animal vulnerable to secondary issues.

FPV is highly contagious, particularly in environments with multiple cats, shelters, or areas where infected cats have been present.

2. How the Virus Affects the Body

The virus tends to impact tissues that regenerate quickly, including:

✔ Intestinal lining

Leading to digestive discomfort and dehydration.

✔ Bone marrow & lymphatic tissue

Reducing white blood cell numbers.

✔ Developing foetal tissue

In pregnant cats, the virus can affect unborn kittens.

✔ Immune system function

Lowered immune resilience can make the cat susceptible to secondary complications.

3. Recognising Signs of Feline Panleukopenia

Signs may vary, and not all appear in every case.


Common features include:

• Sudden tiredness, weakness, or withdrawal
  
  

• Loss of appetite
  
  

• Vomiting or repeated retching
  
  

• Diarrhoea (may be severe or watery)
  
  

• Dehydration (sunken eyes, dry gums)
  
  

• Fever or low temperature
  
  

• Abdominal sensitivity
  
  

• Rapid weight loss
  
  

• Coat appearing rough or dull
  
  

• In kittens: sudden collapse or fading
  
  

Because the immune system becomes compromised, other symptoms may develop depending on the severity.

4. Which Cats Are Most at Risk?

• Young kittens (especially 3–5 months old)
  
  

• Cats exposed to high-stress or crowded environments
  
  

• Outdoor or colony cats
  
  

• Cats recovering from illness
  
  

• Pregnant queens and their unborn kittens
  
  

Stress, poor nutrition, or concurrent infections may reduce immune resilience, increasing susceptibility.

5. Veterinary Evaluation 

Any sudden combination of:

• vomiting
  
  

• diarrhoea
  
  

• lethargy
  
  

• rapid dehydration  *Must request your Vet to give 80ml of warm saline solution of SubQ Fluids  or  give them daily from home.
  
  

• or sudden decline in a kitten   should prompt immediate veterinary attention.
  
  

8. Supporting Vulnerable Cats (General Advice)

For kittens, elderly cats, or cats recovering from illness, supportive care may include:

• warmth
  
  

• quiet environment
  
  

• hydration encouragement   e.g  Daily SubQ fluids just under the skin ... 80ml of warmed up plain saline solution.  (IV not needed)
  
  

• easily digestible food if they are eating
  
  

• gentle emotional support
