Educational Overview
Glaucoma in Pets
Glaucoma is a painful eye condition caused by increased pressure inside the eye due to impaired drainage of fluid. This pressure damages the optic nerve and can rapidly lead to partial or complete blindness if not treated promptly.
Common signs
include redness of the eye, cloudiness or a blue haze, squinting, excessive tearing, pawing at the eye, sensitivity to light, a dilated or non-responsive pupil, and vision loss. Pets may also show lethargy, reduced appetite, or behavioral changes due to pain.
Causes
may be primary (genetic, more common in dogs such as Cocker Spaniels, Basset Hounds, and Shiba Inus) or secondary to other eye conditions such as uveitis, lens luxation, trauma, tumors, or cataracts. Cats often develop glaucoma secondary to chronic eye inflammation.
Diagnosis
is made by a veterinarian using tonometry to measure intraocular pressure, along with a full ophthalmic examination.
Treatment focuses on rapidly lowering eye pressure and managing pain.
Important Veterinary Care
Glaucoma and SARDS both require veterinary diagnosis and ongoing monitoring.
Additional Practitioner Notes
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a condition where fluid builds up inside the eye, increasing intraocular pressure and potentially damaging the optic nerve. Early signs may include watery discharge, cloudiness, bulging of the eye, and sensitivity to light. Supportive care traditionally focuses on circulation, pressure balance, and comfort.
SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome)
SARDS is characterised by sudden and irreversible blindness. While the exact cause remains unclear, immune, adrenal, and metabolic factors are suspected. Supportive care may aim to balance systemic health and strengthen resilience in affected pets.
SET OF
Educational Purposes
Eyes – Glaucoma or SARDS Health Support
The set is intended as part of a broader supportive care approach to promote comfort, wellbeing, and long-term eye vitality.
Nutritional and Supportive Considerations
-
A fresh, whole-food diet (species-appropriate) may help support overall vitality.
-
Avoid high-carbohydrate or heavily processed foods, which may worsen metabolic stress.
-
Omega-3 fatty acids (from fish oil or flax) can help support eye and nerve health.
-
Antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Lutein may support retinal and optic nerve health.
Supplemental Supports (optional)
-
For Eye Pressure: Consider antioxidant blends and circulatory supports.
-
For Nerve Support: Magnesium and B-vitamins may support nerve and eye tissue resilience.
-
For Immune Balance: Herbal adaptogens such as astragalus have been traditionally valued.
Note: Monitor your pet closely for any signs of eye pain, swelling, or sudden vision loss, and seek veterinary care promptly. Natural supports can complement but not replace professional treatment.
Practitioner Notes
Your pet may experience changes in vision that can be linked with conditions such as early or advanced glaucoma, sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS), or other forms of eye degeneration. These may sometimes be associated with issues such as ocular muscle weakness, opacities in the eyes, corneal dystrophy (often considered inherited), or circulation-related changes. Fortunately, many of these conditions are not painful, but they can affect quality of life.
If the eyesight appears more “cloudy bluish-gray” (a sign often related to nuclear sclerosis), then this particular remedy set may not be necessary. Reference: Comfrey: A Clinical Overview
Note: In cases of ocular glaucoma, this set is often recommended to be used in conjunction with the Toxoplasma gondii Parasitic Set for more complete support.
Importance of Diet for Eye Health
Canines
-
Reducing excessive protein (particularly meat) intake may help in balancing blood sugar, which in turn is linked to eye health concerns such as cataracts.
-
Suggested feeding:
-
Meat with cooked vegetables about 3 times weekly.
-
On other days, meals of vegetables only.
-
Fruits (non-citrus, no sultanas) may be given separately from meat meals as snacks. The natural sugars in fruit are generally well-tolerated and provide energy for brain and body function.
-
Avoid commercial junk foods such as standard wet and dry feeds, as many contain 56–70% carbohydrates/sugars that may contribute to blood sugar imbalances.
Felines
-
Cats thrive on a diet rich in high-quality fresh raw protein (both white and red meats).
-
Avoid commercial junk foods (wet or dry) that often contain 56–70% carbohydrates/sugars, which are not suitable for feline physiology.
