Eye Health
Animals rely heavily on healthy eyes, and several conditions can affect the surface of the eye or the tissues around it. Globular proptosis, pannus or keratitis, corneal ulcers, indolent ulcers, and herpes‑related eye disease are among the issues veterinarians see most often.
Globular proptosis occurs when the eye is pushed forward from its normal position. This can happen with trauma or pressure around the eye. It may appear with or without infection, and it’s always a sign that the eye needs immediate attention.
Pannus, also known as chronic superficial keratitis, is a condition where the surface of the eye becomes inflamed and cloudy. It often affects the cornea and can slowly change its appearance over time.
Corneal ulcers form when the clear surface of the eye is damaged. They can cause squinting, redness, or discharge. Indolent corneal ulcers are a special type that heal more slowly because the surface layers of the cornea don’t attach as they should.
Herpes‑related eye disease is most commonly seen in cats. The virus can affect the surface of the eye and the surrounding tissues, leading to irritation, discharge, or recurring flare‑ups.
Because many eye conditions look similar, any sudden change in an animal’s eye appearance or comfort should prompt evaluation. Early recognition helps protect long‑term vision and overall well‑being.
