Educational Overview
Eye Health
Animals rely on healthy eyes to explore their world, but several conditions can affect the eyelids and tear system. Dry eye, cherry eye, chalazion cysts, and meibomian gland tumors are among the most common.
Dry eye occurs when the tear film isn’t adequate, leaving the surface of the eye irritated and vulnerable. Animals may show redness, thick discharge, or frequent blinking.
Cherry eye looks very different. It happens when the third eyelid’s tear gland slips out of place, creating a pink, rounded mass in the corner of the eye. It’s especially common in certain dog breeds.
A chalazion cyst forms when an oil‑producing gland in the eyelid becomes blocked. This creates a small, firm bump that may cause mild irritation or swelling.
Meibomian gland tumors also arise from the eyelid’s oil glands. These growths can vary in appearance - some stay small, while others become more noticeable over time.
Any change in an animal’s eyes or eyelids deserves attention. Early recognition and regular veterinary care help protect vision and overall comfort.
