Educational Overview
West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus is a mosquito‑borne disease that affects a wide range of animals, especially birds and horses.
The virus spreads when a mosquito feeds on an infected bird and later bites another animal.
Horses are among the most commonly affected mammals, but dogs, cats, and wildlife can also be exposed.
Most infected animals never show signs of illness. But when symptoms do appear, they may include fever, weakness, loss of coordination, or changes in behavior.
In horses, severe cases can lead to neurological problems such as stumbling, muscle tremors, or difficulty standing.
There is no specific cure for West Nile Virus, but supportive veterinary care can help animals recover. Prevention is the best protection.
Reducing mosquito exposure—through repellents, eliminating standing water, and using protective housing—greatly lowers risk.
Understanding how West Nile spreads helps protect both animals and the people who care for them.
Simple mosquito control steps can make a big difference.”
