Equine Strangles (Streptococcus equi)

Equine Strangles, caused by Streptococcus equi, is a contagious bacterial respiratory infection in horses. It commonly presents with fever, nasal discharge, coughing, swollen lymph nodes around the throat or jaw, and difficulty swallowing.

The bacteria spreads through direct contact, contaminated equipment, water sources, or handler transfer. Some horses may recover fully, while others can become temporary carriers.

Early veterinary assessment, isolation protocols, and biosecurity measures are important in managing outbreaks and protecting herd health.

Equine Strangles (S. equi) / Equine Distemper

One client shared that their horse was given a very guarded prognosis after X-ray showed the affected pouch was full, with too much inflammation and discharge for scoping.
