Educational Overview
Equine Sarcoids
Equine sarcoids are one of the most common skin tumours seen in horses. They are generally slow‑growing and remain on the skin’s surface, but they can vary widely in appearance and behaviour."
Common Causes
-
Associated with bovine papillomavirus exposure
-
Spread often linked to flies that move between horses
-
Skin trauma or wounds may create areas where sarcoids are more likely to develop
-
Individual horses may have a genetic or immune‑related susceptibility
Common Signs
-
Firm or fleshy skin nodules that may stay small or gradually enlarge
-
Flat, scaly, or wart‑like patches on the skin
-
Ulcerated or crusted growths in areas prone to rubbing
-
Lesions commonly found on the face, limbs, groin, chest, or around the eyes
-
Growths that persist rather than healing like normal wounds
Diagnostic Approach
-
Veterinary examination focusing on the appearance and location of the lesion
-
Discussion of how long the growth has been present and whether it has changed
-
Biopsy or tissue sampling when appropriate to confirm the type of tumour
-
Tests used to rule out other skin conditions that may look similar

SET OF
Educational Purposes
Equine sarcoids are one of the most common skin growths seen in horses, donkeys, and mules.
They are generally considered benign and non-life-threatening but can sometimes be locally persistent.
Sarcoids can appear in various forms, such as thickened, crusted, or ulcerated areas on the skin.
Other conditions like papillomas (warts) may look similar but often regress on their own, while sarcoids tend to persist.
Feline Information:
Similar growths may also occur in cats, referred to as Feline Fibropapillomas (papillomavirus-related growths).
