Equine – Cottonweed Exposure & Detox Support
Cottonweed, also known as Asclepias syriaca or common milkweed, contains naturally occurring toxins that can affect the heart, digestive system, and overall vitality of grazing animals. Understanding how exposure occurs and what early signs look like helps support timely veterinary evaluation.
Common Causes
- Ingestion of fresh or dried Asclepias syriaca plants while grazing
- Consumption of contaminated hay or forage containing milkweed stems or leaves
- Limited pasture availability leading animals to eat unfamiliar or unpreferred plants
- Environmental stressors such as drought, overgrazing, or poor pasture rotation increasing exposure
- Young or inexperienced animals sampling toxic plants out of curiosity
Common Signs
- Digestive upset such as drooling, abdominal discomfort, or reduced appetite
- Changes in heart rate or rhythm due to cardiac glycoside effects
- Weakness, unsteady gait, or reluctance to move
- Tremors, restlessness, or behavioural changes
- In severe cases, collapse or signs of significant cardiovascular stress
- In ruminants, decreased rumen activity or reduced milk production may be observed
Recognizing how Cottonweed exposure occurs and understanding early signs of toxicity helps support prompt veterinary assessment and protects herd health.
