Educational Overview
Vaccines in Horses
Vaccines in horses are used to stimulate the immune system’s natural recognition and response to specific infectious agents. They are commonly considered as part of an overall health and biosecurity plan, particularly for horses that travel, compete, or interact with other horses.
Vaccination recommendations for equines may vary depending on age, lifestyle, geographic location, exposure risk, and overall health status. Young horses often begin vaccination programs early in life, while adult horses may receive boosters based on veterinary risk assessment rather than a fixed schedule.
Individual horses can respond differently to vaccination. Some may show no noticeable changes, while others may experience short-term, mild changes in energy or behaviour as the immune system responds.
Vaccination decisions for horses are best made in consultation with a veterinarian, taking into account current health, workload, and environmental factors.
Equine Health Context - EHV-1
Equine Herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1), also known as rhinopneumonitis, is a contagious virus that can affect horses worldwide.
It may present with respiratory signs and, in some cases, involvement of the central nervous system (CNS). This neurological form can be associated with inflammation, reduced blood flow (thrombosis), and myelopathy, which is the result of compression or damage to the spinal cord and nerve roots.
Veterinarians typically diagnose EHV-1 using a nasal swab or blood test, and management usually requires veterinary supervision.
Note: Always consult with your veterinarian if you suspect your horse has EHV-1 or any other health concern. Natural formulas may be used as part of a holistic wellness program alongside veterinary advice.
This information is provided for educational purposes only and does not diagnose, treat, prevent, or cure disease. Veterinary guidance should always be sought when making vaccination decisions for equines.
