Educational Overview
Eosinophilic Ulcers in Dogs
Eosinophilic ulcers in dogs are inflamed, raised sores that form when the immune system overreacts, often triggered by allergies, insect bites, or skin irritation. These lesions can appear on the lips or inside the mouth and may look similar to infections or other skin conditions. Any persistent swelling, redness, or ulceration should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
Supporting skin comfort involves reducing potential irritants, keeping the area clean, and monitoring for changes in eating or grooming. A veterinarian can identify the underlying trigger and guide appropriate care for the individual dog.

SET OF
Educational Purposes
Eosinophilic ulcers, sometimes referred to as “rodent ulcers,” are lesions that may appear in the mouth or around the lips of dogs. They are part of a group of conditions often described as the eosinophilic granuloma complex.
In dogs, these ulcers can occur:
They are generally recognized as areas of inflammation where the tissue becomes ulcerated, creating sore patches that may look raw or swollen. While more commonly discussed in cats, eosinophilic ulcers are also seen in dogs, and they may be linked to immune or inflammatory responses.
Supportive care often focuses on overall wellness, immune balance, and reducing environmental or dietary stressors that may contribute to flare-ups.
Eosinophilic Ulcer in Cats
Eosinophilic ulcer, sometimes referred to as “rodent ulcer,” is a condition where eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) accumulate in the tissues. While eosinophils normally help fight infection, in this case the immune response does not switch off properly.
As eosinophils invade the tissue, circulation may be impeded, inflammation develops, and scar tissue can form. This can result in tissue damage and cell death. In cats, this often presents as an ulcer on the upper lip, though in more severe cases the lower lip, oral cavity, or even the legs (lick granuloma) may be affected.
Practitioner Notes
To support immune balance and tissue repair, the following additions are often recommended:
-
Probiotics: A good pinch is added to every meal, continued for at least 2 months.
-
Zinc Picolinate: A good pinch of powder (from capsule) in each meal to support skin and DNA repair. Zinc deficiency may predispose to ulcers and eczema.
-
Vitamin C: Either Vitamin C powder (a pinch in meals) or 1 teaspoon of Liposomal C liquid daily to strengthen tissue integrity and immune resilience.
-
Formula Support: The Elimination 336 formula may be useful in gently drawing out infection in mouth or skin tissues.
Formulated with plant-based ingredients selected for their gentle role in supporting overall balance and wellbeing.
