Ear Infections Vs Middle Ear Infections
Vestibular neuritis (or vestibular neuronitis) and labyrinthitis are disorders that result in inflammation of the inner ear and/or the nerve connecting the inner ear to the brain.

~ EAR INFECTIONS:
inflammation and bacterial infection, pain in the middle ear (otitis media) Generally ear infections are caused by a viral infection, (e.g Herpes virus, Epstein Barr virus) these conditions cause vertigo (usually experienced as a spinning sensation), dizziness, imbalance, unsteadiness, and sometimes problems with vision or hearing.
Middle ear infections have a tendency to become chronic and may lead to hearing loss. Often the cause is viral that has been undetected. In these cases, the outer part of the ear becomes infected by one or more of the following: yeast (Malassezia sp.), cocci bacteria (often Staphylococcus sp.), and rod bacteria (commonly Pseudomonas sp.
General ear skin infection in the ear canal can hosts many different type of infections ... bacteria, fungi and even viruses.
These are all kept in balance to create a healthy and protective skin microbiome, that creates a protective skin barrier in combination with the skin mantle. There are pathogenic species as part of this microbe community, however, the immune system keeps them in balance and under control. When there is inflammation, increased mucous, wax build up, irritation to the skin, or anything else that affects the integrity of the skin, these unfriendly species can proliferate, which leads to infection.
Some of the underlying factor seen of ear infections can also be "allergic otitis"
Dogs can experience allergies mostly due to a inappropriate diet. i.e. Dry Food - Kibble.
Contact with the allergen causes an immune response that causes inflammation and irritation to the tissues in the ear, with the skin, sinuses, eyes, and ears often being affected. Allergies cause irritation to the skin leading to inflammation, an increase in blood flow, and increase in wax build up which weakens the integrity of the skin. This causes the ears to become hot and creates the perfect environment for an infection to occur.
Dogs with floppy ears ( e.g Cocker spaniels) are more prone to this type of ear conditon as air flow to the ear is reduced, creating the ideal environment for infections.
When caused by an environmental allergen, the ear infection is generally recurrent and typically seasonal – however, if the cause is food related then it will occur all year.
When ear infections are not resolved promptly, or when they continually reoccur, there can be tissue damage and scarring in the ear. This can reduce the size of the ear opening and lead to more problems with airflow, congestion and difficulty applying the ear drops where they are needed most.
