Equines – Tying-Up (Azoturia)

Physiologically, tying-up (azoturia) occurs when acid builds up in the muscles faster than the kidneys can clear it. The result is muscle spasms, stiffness, and soreness as muscle groups pull against one another.

Through both research and observation, it is clear that potassium and magnesium are the primary minerals to support in these cases. They are essential for muscle relaxation, healthy circulation, and balanced electrolyte function.

Common causes of electrolyte imbalance in horses include:

– Loss of fluids through heavy sweating (common in working and competition horses)
– Not drinking enough fluids
– Excessive urination
– Vomiting or diarrhea
– Liver or kidney concerns
– Certain medications such as diuretics or laxatives
– Congestive heart failure

The most important electrolyte alongside magnesium is potassium. Adequate levels help stabilise nerves, muscles, and energy function.   (References: Dr Berg – video, article)

Canines – Muscle Spasms and Cramps

Dogs can experience involuntary muscle contractions ranging from mild twitches to more prolonged spasms. Causes include:
– Electrolyte imbalances (low magnesium or potassium)
– Dehydration
– Over-exertion or extreme exercise
– Trauma or injury
– Nervous system irritation

Spasms can appear as post-distemper tics, generalised twitching, stomach pain, angina-like chest tightness, or coronary artery spasm linked to heart stress.

Working breeds and performance dogs are particularly at risk when they push to the point of exhaustion. This extreme strain can deplete electrolytes, leading to muscle cramping and distress.

Heat-Related Muscle Concerns

Heat Cramps – painful contractions in the arms, legs, or trunk from electrolyte deficiency during heavy sweating. Fluids and electrolyte replacement usually resolve the issue.
(Also see Cool Ease 178 formula for support.)

Heat Exhaustion – marked by weakness, dizziness, nausea, fainting, and muscle cramps. Caused by dehydration and salt loss. Recovery involves rest, fluids, and salt replacement.
(Also see Cool Ease 178 formula.)

Heat Stroke – a serious condition from failure of temperature regulation. Symptoms include high body temperature (above 105°F), lack of sweating/panting, confusion, collapse, convulsions, and rapid pulse. Immediate veterinary care is essential.

CRAMP-SPASM EASE 267-C formula
is designed as a natural support option for equines and canines, helping maintain balanced electrolytes, supporting muscle comfort, and encouraging healthy recovery from over-exertion or heat stress.
