Educational Overview
Corona.V (FCoV, CCoV, ECoV, SARS)
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, and many animal species have their own unique versions. Feline coronavirus, canine coronavirus, equine coronavirus, and certain SARS‑related coronaviruses each behave differently and affect different animals.
Feline coronavirus, or FCoV, is common in multi‑cat environments. Most cats show no signs or may experience mild digestive upset. In rare cases, the virus can change inside the body and contribute to more serious illness.
Canine coronavirus, or CCoV, typically affects the intestinal tract of dogs. It’s most often associated with mild digestive signs, especially in young or group‑housed dogs. Many dogs recover quickly, but changes in appetite or behavior are important to notice.
Equine coronavirus, or ECoV, is seen in horses and can lead to fever, reduced energy, or changes in eating habits. It’s most often identified in adult horses living in barns, training facilities, or other group settings.
SARS‑related coronaviruses are different. While they primarily affect humans, certain animals can become infected under specific circumstances. These infections are uncommon, and the way the virus behaves can vary depending on the species.
Each of these viruses is species‑specific in how it naturally circulates. Because signs of illness can overlap with many other conditions, any noticeable change in an animal’s health should prompt evaluation.
Understanding these coronaviruses helps caregivers recognize early changes and support the overall well‑being of the animals in their care.
