Educational Overview
Canine Parvovirus (CPV, CPV-2c) in Dogs
Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious viral infection affecting dogs. CPV-2c is a variant strain associated with severe gastrointestinal disease. The virus targets rapidly dividing cells, especially in the intestinal lining and bone marrow, leading to vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), dehydration, and weakened immunity.
Clinical signs ... include lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and rapid dehydration. Puppies are most at risk due to immature immunity. Transmission occurs via direct contact with infected dogs or contaminated environments, as the virus is extremely resilient.
Management is primarily supportive: intensive fluid therapy, electrolyte and nutritional support, and treatment of secondary bacterial infections. Strict hygiene and isolation protocols are critical to control the spread in households, kennels, or shelters.
