Educational Overview
Canine Digestive Issues - Pancreatic Pain/ Pancreatitis
Digestive discomfort in dogs can sometimes be linked with strain on the pancreas, which may contribute to changes in appetite, energy, and digestion
What’s happening
- The pancreas produces digestive enzymes and insulin.
- In pancreatitis, enzymes activate inside the pancreas, causing inflammation and pain.
- Can be acute (sudden, severe) or chronic (ongoing, milder).
Common signs in Canines
- Vomiting, nausea, drooling
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal pain (prayer position)
- Diarrhoea or greasy stools
- Lethargy, weakness
- Fever or dehydration (acute cases)
Common triggers
- High-fat foods or treats i.e Kibble - dry foods, pork
- Sudden diet changes
- Obesity
- Endocrine disease (diabetes, Cushing’s)
- Certain medications.
Example, if your pet is receiving Prednisone or other catabolic steroid injections please be aware that these medications have been associated with triggering or worsening pancreatitis. The commonly used diuretic Lasix (Furosemide) drug has also been linked to pancreatitis episodes in both dogs and cats.
- Stress or toxin exposure
Diagnosis
- Spec cPL blood test
- Abdominal ultrasound
- Routine bloodwork
