Educational Overview
Bruising in Performance Animals
What is bruising?
Bruising occurs when small blood vessels are damaged, causing blood to leak into surrounding tissues.
In performance animals, bruising commonly affects muscles, tendons, ligaments, feet, and bone surfaces due to high physical demands.
Common causes
• Repetitive impact or overtraining
• Hard or uneven ground surfaces
• Poor saddle, harness, or equipment fit
• Hoof imbalance or improper shoeing
• Slips, falls, or collisions
• Nutritional deficiencies affecting tissue resilience
Signs you may observe
• Localized swelling, heat, or tenderness
• Sensitivity to touch or pressure
• Reduced performance or reluctance to work
• Stiffness or shortened stride
• Subtle lameness or uneven movement
• Behavioral changes linked to discomfort
Why bruising matters
Untreated bruising can lead to chronic inflammation, compensatory injuries, and prolonged recovery time, increasing the risk of more serious musculoskeletal damage.
Supportive care strategies
• Immediate rest or workload reduction
• Cold therapy in the acute phase
• Gradual return to exercise once soreness resolves
• Proper equipment fitting and biomechanical support
• Nutritional support for vascular and tissue integrity
• Monitoring for progression to lameness or deeper injury

Using Vitamin C as a Supportive Health for Equines
Vitamin C is widely recognised as an essential nutrient for general health.
It plays an important role in supporting the body’s natural defences and maintaining the integrity of connective tissues.
In traditional health writing, Vitamin C has also been associated with assisting the normal function of large and small blood vessels, helping to keep them strong and resilient.
For additional nutritional support, Vitamin C can be combined with formulations that include bioflavonoids such as rutin, quercetin, and hesperidin.
These plant compounds are commonly found in citrus and other botanicals, and are often recommended alongside Vitamin C for their complementary actions.
An example is Natures Plus Super Vitamin C Complex 1000mg, which includes a blend of Vitamin C with natural bioflavonoids.
This type of combination is often chosen to provide broad-spectrum nutritional support for general wellbeing.
