Educational Overview
Birthing, or Parturition in Pets
Birthing, or parturition, is the process by which female pets deliver their young. Proper care before, during, and after birth is essential for the health of both the mother and her offspring.
Stages of birthing:
-
Preparation (First Stage):
-
Nesting behavior, restlessness, pacing
-
Mild panting or shaking
-
Loss of appetite in some pets
-
Active Labor (Second Stage):
-
Strong abdominal contractions
-
Delivery of kittens or puppies
-
Mother may lick and clean each newborn
-
Afterbirth (Third Stage):
Signs of normal birthing:
-
Regular contractions and progress
-
Each newborn delivered within 30–60 minutes of active labor
-
Mother attentive to the newborns, cleaning and nursing them
When to seek veterinary help:
-
Labor lasting >24 hours without delivery (dogs) or >12 hours (cats)
-
Strong contractions with no newborns delivered within 2 hours
-
Excessive bleeding or foul-smelling discharge
-
Weakness, collapse, or distress in the mother
-
Signs of retained placenta or stillbirth
Supportive care for mother and newborns:
-
Quiet, warm, and safe environment
-
Clean bedding and nesting area
-
Minimal handling unless necessary
-
Ensure newborns are breathing, warm, and nursing
Proper nutrition and hydration for the mother
Birthing is a natural but delicate process. Close observation, a safe environment, and timely veterinary intervention when needed are crucial to ensure the health and survival of both mother and offspring.

Milk Fever, also referred to as Canine Eclampsia or Lactational Hypocalcaemia, can sometimes arise in nursing pets and farm animals when mineral balance is under strain. Supporting the body during these times has traditionally included the use of natural mineral preparations and calming supports.

Magnesium has historically been considered in natural health as an important mineral during times of heightened demand. Liquid magnesium preparations are often chosen for ease of use and ongoing support.
