Understanding Stress in Pets

Stress in pets can arise from many different situations. Changes in the environment, such as moving house, a shift in routine, or the absence of a human or animal companion, may trigger feelings of anxiety. Traumatic or uncertain events can also contribute to both acute and chronic stress, leaving an animal unsettled and vulnerable.

Pets often show signs of struggling when they cannot cope with new experiences. Boarding kennels, veterinary visits, new pets in the household, or separation from their bonded humans can all create emotional strain. Shelter and rescue animals, in particular, may carry memories of past trauma and require extra comfort and reassurance.

Fear, stress, and even depression can manifest in ways that owners sometimes mistake for disobedience or aggression. For example, moving house can cause significant strain on felines, while dogs that suddenly become aggressive may be reacting to an underlying painful condition. Research highlights that otherwise gentle animals can lash out when they are in discomfort, sometimes showing defensive body posture, sudden outbursts during handling, or reacting aggressively without warning.

Pain is also a critical factor. Noise sensitivity, for example, has been shown to be a subtle sign of pain in dogs. A sudden change in temperament—such as a calm, friendly dog or cat becoming unexpectedly aggressive—should always prompt a thorough veterinary examination. Hip dysplasia, undiagnosed dental pain, arthritis, or internal discomfort are all possible contributors.

Older animals may also show clinginess as their eyesight begins to fade, with cataracts or other age-related changes leaving them feeling insecure. Younger pets, on the other hand, can display uncertainty when they pick up on the emotional energy of their environment. Checking basic health markers such as teeth, stools, urination, eyesight, and feeling the body for lumps is an important part of ruling out physical causes.

Separation anxiety is another common concern. Dogs are naturally pack animals and, in the wild, rarely separate from their group. In the home, this instinct can lead to difficulty when left alone. A dog with separation anxiety may howl, bark, chew, or pace when their human companions are away. Returning home to this kind of behavior often signals that your pet is struggling with being apart from you.

Practical tools such as Tellington TTouch, developed by Linda Tellington in the USA, can be valuable in helping stressed or anxious animals. This gentle method has been shown to relax both dogs and cats, restoring calmness through touch. Demonstrations and practitioner resources are widely available online.

Signs of Stress in Pets

Recognizing stress early can help prevent escalation and improve wellbeing. Common signs may include shaking or trembling, excessive licking or grooming, hiding or avoiding interaction, chewing or scratching furniture, pacing or restlessness, loss of appetite, changes in toileting habits, dilated pupils, or sudden aggression. In dogs, separation anxiety may show up as barking or howling when left alone, while in cats it may appear as overgrooming or inappropriate urination.
