~  Possible Salmonella Food Poisoning?
Salmonellosis affects both dogs cats.
Pets can be infected by eating a product contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.
Dogs and cats that become ill from Salmonella infection generally will have diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus. Affected animals may seem more tired than usual, and may have a fever or vomit. Some cats do not have diarrhea, but will have a decreased appetite, fever, and excess salivation.Symptoms of Salmonella infection in cats may include -vomiting, diarrhoea, decreased appetite, fever or excessive salivation.

Note:  The detection of Salmonella or other bacteria in a commercially processed pet food triggers a cascade of events at the state and federal level that lead to a voluntary recall by the pet food manufacturer. The pet food is considered adulterated and not fit for distribution.

It often leads to disorders, including gastroenteritis, spontaneous abortions, and septicemia.

Symptoms and Types
The severity of the disease will often determine the signs and symptoms that are overtly present in the dog. Symptoms commonly seen in dogs with salmonellosis include:

  • Fever
  • Shock
  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Anorexia
  • Weight loss
  • Dehydration
  • Skin disease
  • Mucus in stool
  • Abnormally fast heart rate
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Miscarriage or spontaneous abortion

Chronic forms of salmonellosis may exhibit some of these same symptoms; however, they will be more severe.
These include symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of blood
  • Non-intestinal infections
  • Diarrhea that comes and goes with no logical explanation, which may last up to three or four weeks, or longer

Causes
There are more than 2,000 different types of Salmonella, a Gram-negative enterobacteria. Typically, a host animal carrying the disease will have two or more different microorganisms or types of Salmonellae bacteria that cause these symptoms. Risk factors include the dog's age, with younger and older animals most at risk due to their underdeveloped and/or compromised immune systems. Similarly, dogs with weak immune systems or immature gastrointestinal tracts are at risk. Dogs receiving Anti-Microbial therapy are also at risk because the healthy bacteria that line the digestive tract (or florae), may become imbalanced, increasing the risk of salmonellosis.

Diagnosis
To confirm a diagnosis of salmonellosis, your veterinarian will examine your dog for different physical and pathological findings.

Unfortunately, a dog infected with the bacteria will typically not show any clinical symptoms. However, some dogs do have gastroenteritis, the gastrointestinal system that presents with an inability to eat, general poor health and fatigue, depression, and a chronic fever that may stay as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
Other diagnostic features include:

  • Acute vomiting and diarrhea
  • Low albumin
  • Low platelet levels
  • Non-regenerative anemia
  • Abnormally low white blood cell count
  • Electrolyte imbalances, which may include sodium and potassium imbalances

Your veterinarian may want to also rule out other conditions that can result in similar symptoms, including parasites, dietary-induced stress (including allergy or food intolerance), drug or toxin-induced stresses, and diseases like viral gastroenteritis or bacterial gastroenteritis caused by E. Coli or other common bacteria. Diagnostic procedures typically involve collecting urine and fecal samples for laboratory analysis. Your veterinarian may also find it helpful to conduct blood cultures.

~ E.Coli (Colibacillosis) in a Cat
Escherichia coli,
commonly known as E. coli, is a bacterium that normally resides in the lower intestines of most warm blooded mammals, including cats. Normally, the presence of E. coli is benign, and even beneficial, but in some cases it can cause a diseased condition called colibacillosis.  E. coli infection is most commonly seen in kittens in the first weeks of life. In the first day after giving birth, queens produce a watery milk that is rich in antibodies. This milk, called colostrum, plays a pivotal role in protecting a newborn kitten's undeveloped immune system against various infections, as it coats the intestinal tract, protecting the kitten from most infections. In the absence of these antibodies, kittens are more vulnerable to a number of infections, including E. coli infection.  If the pregnant queen is infected with E. coli, the bacteria can also invade a kitten's blood supply while it is still in uterus, during birth, or the kitten can acquire the infection from feeding from its mother's inflamed mammary glands.  Colibacillosis often leads to a condition called septicemia, or blood poisoning, meaning there is an dangerously high presence of bacteria in the blood. Though primarily a disease of young cats, it can also affect older cats, though usually not as severely.

Symptoms and Types
Colibacillosis is sudden (acute) in nature and may cause following symptoms in affected kitten:

  • Depression
  • Dehydration
  • Lack of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Watery diarrhea
  • Cold skin due to low body temperature
  • Bluish colored mucous membranes (i.e., gums, nostrils, lips, ears, anus) due to inadequate oxygen in red blood cells.
